David Byrne’s new book How Music Works is out today, a follow-up to 2010’s Bicycle Diaries. This book is part autobiographical flashbacks, part technical instruction, and part music theory. In the preface, Byrne writes “How music works, or doesn’t work, is determined not just by what it is in isolation, but in large part by what surrounds it, where you hear it and when you hear it.” The book has gotten some lukewarm reviews so far, but I can’t help but be curious.
